GOP rep says there are 'some awfully bad people' among 'Dreamers'

Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) early Thursday blasted President Obama’s executive order protecting illegal immigrants brought to the U.S. as children, saying there are “some awfully bad people” among the so-called Dreamers.

“These Dreamers go on up to the age of 37 or 38 or maybe older,” King said on CNN. “And that’s if they tell the truth.”

King claimed many of the children covered under Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program are walking across the border on their own.

“They know what they’re doing. It’s not against their will,” he said. “And they came here to live in the shadows.”

DACA provides work authorization and a temporary halt on deportation to illegal immigrants who arrived as children if they meet certain requirements.

King said he expects President-elect Donald TrumpDonald John TrumpSenate advances public lands bill in late-night vote Warren, Democrats urge Trump to back down from veto threat over changing Confederate-named bases Esper orders ‘After Action Review’ of National Guard’s role in protests MORE to cancel the DACA program on his first day in office, based on Trump’s past comments.

“And that would end it for them,” he said.

“And then as they’re encountered by law enforcement, local law enforcement often, then they would be put through the process. That’s what we would expect from his campaign promises.”

King said he thinks the term “Dreamers” to refer to people who qualify under the order is the “most sympathetic term that could be applied” to the group.

Trump in an interview published Wednesday said he is “going to work something out” for those undocumented immigrants brought to the country as children.

He said during the interview he will do something that will “make people happy and proud.”

“They got brought here at a very young age, they’ve worked here, they’ve gone to school here,” he said. “Some were good students. Some have wonderful jobs. And they’re in never-never land because they don’t know what’s going to happen.”
