Field set for 2019 NCAA DII Softball Championships

INDIANAPOLIS — The NCAA Division II Softball Committee has selected the 64 teams that will participate in the 2019 NCAA Division II Softball Championship. Four teams will participate at each of the 16 regional sites in double-elimination tournaments, held May 9-11.  Winners will advance to the super regionals, slated for May 16-17. The finals will be held May 23-27 at the Regency Athletic Complex in Denver and will be hosted by Metropolitan State University of Denver.

The field includes defending national champions Southern Indiana (pictured) and national runner-up Saint Anselm, along with 2018 National Championship participants – West Chester, Saint Leo, North Georgia, Chico State and Southern Arkansas.

The 16 regional sites will be hosted by West Liberty State and West Virginia State in the Atlantic, Central Oklahoma and Winona State in the Central, Saint Anselm and Wilmington (3 seed) in the East, Grand Valley State and Missouri-St. Louis in the Midwest, West Florida and Florida Tech in the South, Texas A&M-Kingsville and Texas A&M-Commerce in the South Central, North Georgia and Carson-Newman in the Southeast and Concordia Irvine and UC San Diego in the West.

In a rare occurance, the Midwest and Southeast No. 2 Regionals feature four squads from same conference. In the Midwest, it is the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC)- UMSL, Illinois Springfield, Indianapolis and Truman State and in the Southeast, the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) – Carson-Newman, Anderson, Lincoln Memorial and Wingate. It will be an opening-round rematch of the SAC’s tournament championship contest, which saw Anderson defeat Carson-Newman, 13-11. The GLVC’s title game participants – UMSL and Indianapolis – could meet as early as each team’s respective second games.

The GLVC and SAC along with the Lone Star Conference (South Central) earned the most bids with five apiece. The Mountain East (Atlantic), Northern Sun (Central), Northeast-10 (East), Gulf South (South) and the California Collegiate Athletic Association (West).
