France handed another World Cup blow after Steve Mandanda injury

Steve Mandanda came off injured during Rennes‘ UEFA Europa League fixture against Fenerbahçe on Thursday evening.

According to Foot Mercato, the injury to the French custodian has now jeopardised his World Cup chances.

Didier Deschamps will announce the French squad for the upcoming World Cup in Qatar on November 9.

Mandanda started Thursday’s fixture against the Turkish side but had to come off in the second half after sustaining an injury that could rule him out of the extravaganza starting next month.

The former Marseille goalkeeper joined the French side as a replacement for Mike Maignan in Les Blues’ UEFA Nations League squad last September. Maignan’s calf injury, coupled with Mandanda’s fresh knock, could keep two of Deschamps’ most reliable goalkeepers out of the World Cup squad for France.

It is understood that Alphonse Areola and Alban Lafont could get the call-up if neither Mandanda nor Maignan makes the squad for the 2022 World Cup. Les Bleus kick off their World Cup campaign with a game against Australia on November 22.
