St. Cloud State headed to Dragon Open on Dec. 7

St. Cloud State University maintained the No. 5 ranking in the first regular season NCAA Division II wrestling poll, according to the rankings released Wednesday by the Division II Wrestling Coaches Association. The Huskies gained 125 points in the balloting, while Maryville led the poll with 157 points.

The Huskies will continue their 2014-15 season on Sunday, Dec. 7 with a trip to the annual Dragon Open in Moorhead, Minn.  This open style tournament will be hosted by Minnesota State University, Moorhead and it will begin at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 7.  Fans can follow the action on www.trackwrestling.com.

The Dragon Open will start a busy week for the Huskies as they will open their dual meet season on Wednesday, Dec. 10 with a 7 p.m. match against Concordia-Moorhead in Halenbeck Hall. Tickets for this match may be purchased at the gate. SCSU will conclude the week on Dec. 13 with the annual Holiday Inn/Husky Open in the Halenbeck Hall Fieldhouse. Action will get underway at 9 a.m. on Dec. 13 and fans can purchase tickets at the gate on the day of the Husky Open.

SCSU Wrestling Notes and News:

  • SCSU wrestlers ranked among the nation’s top eight in the latest DII poll are as follows: Jay Hildreth (1st at 149), Clint Poster (2nd at 157), Gabe Fogarty (5th at 165), Clayton Jennissen (7th at 174) and Austin Goergen (3rd at 285).
  • The Huskies have charted an impressive 80-3 dual match record over the past four seasons.
  • The Huskies own an 18-match home winning streak as they enter the 2014-15 dual season. The last time SCSU lost a match in Halenbeck Hall was a 21-15 loss to Upper Iowa on Feb. 14, 2010.
  • Steve Costanzo is in his ninth season with the Huskies and he owns a 119-24 record here in the Granite City.
  • Redshirt junior Clint Poster owns a perfect 9-0 record this season at 157-pounds, which includes first place finishes at the ISU Open and the Concordia Open.
  • Freshman Larry Bomstad has impressed early with a 10-2 record at 141/149 this season. He also has four falls to his credit this season.
  • Redshirt sophomore Austin Goergen is coming off an All-American season in 2013-14. He currently owns a 7-1 record at 285-pounds this season and has 22 pins in his career at SCSU.
