On Valentine's Day, Watch Meerkats Eat Roaches Named For Your Ex

EL PASO, TX — Anyone who has ever been jilted, cheated on, lied to or stolen from by a romantic partner may find this Valentine’s Day gift simply too delicious — for the El Paso Zoo’s meerkats, anyway — to resist.

Who says revenge is best served cold?

In its unusual Valentine’s Day tribute, the zoo says revenge is best served as a cockroach, named after an ex-paramour, to a pack of hungry meerkats.

“Message us your ex’s name and we’ll name a cockroach after them,” the zoo said in a Facebook post.

The names — first and last initial — will be posted on Facebook beginning Feb. 11; and on Valentine’s Day, zoo staff will feed the cockroaches to the meerkats. The whole thing will be livestreamed on the zoo’s Meerkat webcam and in a Facebook Live video on Valentine’s Day.

Apparently, the meerkats love munching on cockroaches, even those named after someone who was thrown back into the dating pool.

Also apparent: It’s a thing.

Across the pond in Kent, England, the Hemsley Conservation Centre also is inviting people to name a cockroach after their exes.

“The start of 2020 let’s face it, hasn’t been great … and if you have been dumped recently it is even worse,” the organization said on its website, adding that “for those that don’t quite require revenge, there’s another way to make you feel better about getting back at your ex on Valentine’s Day.”

The Bronx Zoo has a similar event, but it plays on published research suggesting cockroaches will outlive us all.

“You don’t always have the right words, but you can still give them goosebumps,” the zoo said on its website. “Name a roach for your Valentine, because roaches are forever.”

The Bronx Zoo also pitches roach socks and eu de roach candles to complete the Valentine’s Day package.

Who wouldn’t swoon over that?
