Austin Homeless Man Dons Suit And Tie To Beg For Job. Then This.
AUSTIN, TX — A rags-to-riches story in the making centered on a homeless man in California by way of Austin simultaneously illustrates the power of social media and the strength of the human spirit.
Like many moving to California in quest of fortune, David Casarez, 26, headed to the city of Mountain View, Calif. to launch a startup firm, armed with a degree in management information systems from Texas A&M University and solid work history at a General Motors we developer in Austin, as the New York Post reported.
But things didn’t go as planned. The startup never got off the ground like he had hoped. He lost his money and his car and soon found himself homeless, sleeping in a public park, he told the Post.
Still placing a premium on maintaining a professional appearance despite his homelessness, Casarez reportedly has been donning a suit and tie while holding up a sign on a road median that reads: “Homeless. Hungry 4 Success. Take a resume.”
His persistence paid off last Friday, according to the report, when Jasmine Scofield happened to drive by before asking permission to post a photo of Casarez online. She related the encounter on Twitter: “Today I saw this young homeless man asking for people to take a resume rather than asking for money,” Scofield wrote on Twitter. “If anyone in the Silicon Valley could help him out, that would be amazing. Please RT so we can help David out!”
Her tweet gained traction, garnering some 120,000 retweets and about 200,000 likes. But here’s the best part of this real-life fairy tale: Casarez has received some 200 job offers as a result of the social media exposure, including overtures from Google, LinkedIn and Neflix, according to a subsequent tweet by Scofield.
The reversal of fortune couldn’t have come at a better time for Casarez, who suggested his spirits were starting to ebb before Scofield came along: “I wanted to keep my head up high, keep looking forward and see what opportunity would come next,” he told the Post. “I was thinking, you know, like this was like my last stop. If this didn’t work, I’d go back home and give up on my dream.”
