Why Everyone Is Talking About Reverend Michael Curry’s Sermon at the Royal Wedding

The Most Reverend Michael Bruce Curry, did, well, the most, while delivering his sermon at the royal wedding. 

The presiding bishop of the Episcopal church flew from Buffalo to deliver the speech to the crowds gathered at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle on Saturday morning, which included David and Victoria Beckham, George and Amal Clooney, Meghan Markle’s Suits co-stars, Elton John (in pink sunglasses) and, of course, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge as well as the Queen of England herself, Elizabeth II. 

The sermon was the furthest thing from stuffy, as Curry spoke not just of bible verses and tradition, but also the impact of modern conveniences like Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms that connect us. He also quoted Dr. Martin Luther King (“We must discover the power of love, the redemptive power of love. And when we do that, we will make of this old world a new world”) and spoke of slavery in the American Antebellum South. 

Curry also addressed poverty, which has been a topic floating around in the wake of the royal wedding as detractors lamented that Windsor’s homeless population was getting the boot as a result of the proceedings. 

He soon became the star of Twitter, with users praising his oft-repeated favorite line, “Love is the way!” Curry’s energetic style was also a refreshing burst of enthusiasm for those watching in the wee hours of the morning across the Atlantic in the U.S. Many on social media were also titillated to see the reactions of the royal family (which, to be honest, weren’t particularly noteworthy) as he made his more provocative points. 

His sermon was followed by a soulful version of Ben E. King’s 1961 hit “Stand By Me,” sung by a gospel choir. The song also has political significance, as it was used during the Civil Rights movement as a rallying cry of solidarity, according to Time.

His speech may have been short relative to the rest of the ceremony on Saturday morning, but Curry certainly stole the show.
